Up For Debate Finals Day 2018

On Wednesday July 11th, the 8 finalist schools in the PiXL Up For Debate competition gathered in Oxford to compete to become winners of this year’s competition.

The preliminary rounds were kindly hosted by Jesus College and finalists debated a variety of topics, ranging from whether non-violent offenders should be imprisoned, to whether teacher’s should receive performance-related pay.

After a tough three rounds, Swakeleys School for Girls and Hinchingbrooke School were our grand finalists. The Grand Final was held in the Oxford Union’s Debating Chamber and the teams debated whether or not developing countries should prioritise economic development over environmental protection.

It was a fantastic, and extremely close, debate but in the end Swakeleys School for Girls were crowned this year’s winners of Up For Debate!

A huge well done to Swakeleys, and all the 8 finalist schools, and a huge thank you to Jesus College and the Oxford Union for hosting the competition.

Registrations for Up For Debate 2018/19 will open soon. Find out more.
